At Algu Roots, we are founded on three core pillars: Clarity, Confidence, and Planning. In this post, I want to share my journey with clarity, the foundational work that led me to create Algu Roots and inspires the services we offer. By breaking down clarity into three actionable steps—Awareness, Purpose, and Focus—I’ll show how this approach shaped my business and how it can help you achieve your goals.

Step 1: Awareness—Understanding Where You Are
Clarity begins with awareness. Before moving forward, you need to understand your current situation—what’s working, what’s not, and why you’re feeling stuck.
When I started my first business in 2003, I wasn’t fully aware of what running a business involved, especially regarding marketing. I was handed a package of strategies and documents, but instead of feeling equipped, I felt utterly lost. That experience forced me to step back and reflect.
Actionable Insight: Take inventory of your current situation. What’s holding you back? What’s your starting point? Awareness is about honest self-reflection without judgment.
This meant acknowledging that I lacked the knowledge and tools to succeed in that first business attempt. This realization was the first step toward changing my approach and finding a more straightforward path forward.
Step 2: Purpose—Defining Your Why
Once you have awareness, the next step is defining your purpose. Purpose gives clarity in its direction. It’s the reason behind your goals and the fuel that keeps you going when challenges arise.
After my first business failed, I asked myself: Why did I want to start a business in the first place? The answer was clear: I wanted time and financial freedom. Once I uncovered my "why," I began exploring ways to achieve it.
One of the most transformative steps I took was enrolling in the Earnable course by Ramit Sethi. This program taught me to align my goals with my purpose. I realized my previous business idea wasn’t truly mine—it was someone else’s concept that didn’t align with my values or vision.
Actionable Insight: Reflect on your "why." Why do you want to achieve your goal? Is it for personal fulfillment, family, or financial stability? Your purpose will anchor your efforts and give your actions meaning.
Step 3: Focus—Turning Vision into Action
Awareness and purpose create the foundation but focus turns clarity into results. Focus is breaking down your vision into actionable steps and committing to the work.
I was asked to define my business idea during one of the Earnable sessions. Initially, I thought I already had one. But as I reflected deeper, I realized that my previous business plan would have made me self-employed, not a valid business owner. This clarity led me to focus on building something aligned with my long-term goals: Algu Roots.
Actionable Insight: Identify one priority at a time and break it into smaller steps. Focus prevents overwhelm and keeps you moving forward.
For me, this looked like:
Redefining my business idea to align with my purpose of financial freedom for myself and my community.
Outlining small, actionable steps to build the foundation of Algu Roots—starting with market research, connecting with others, and crafting a clear vision.
Conclusion: Your Clarity Formula
Clarity isn’t a one-time realization; it’s a practice that evolves as you grow. By working through the steps of awareness, purpose, and focus, I transformed my vision into a business that serves my goals and empowers my community.
If you’re feeling stuck, try this step-by-step clarity formula:
Awareness: Understand your starting point.
Purpose: Define your "why."
Focus: Break down your goals into actionable steps.
